What To Do When Your Car Overheats

Few things get a driver’s attention faster than a temperature gauge climbing into the danger zone. If your car starts overheating, the most important thing is not to panic and not to keep driving like nothing is wrong. An overheating engine can go from a minor cooling system problem to major engine damage surprisingly fast.

The good news is that a few calm, smart steps can help you protect the vehicle and avoid making the situation worse.

PULL OVER AS SOON AS IT IS SAFE

If you see the temperature light come on, notice steam from under the hood, or watch the gauge rise higher than normal, get the car off the road as soon as you safely can. Do not try to “push through” and hope it cools down on its own.

Once you are in a safe place, turn the engine off. That stops more heat from building up and gives the cooling system a chance to settle down. If you are briefly stuck in traffic before you can pull over, switching off the air conditioning may help reduce strain on the engine for that short stretch.

DO NOT OPEN THE RADIATOR CAP

This is one of the biggest mistakes people make. When a vehicle overheats, the cooling system can be under a lot of pressure. Opening the radiator cap too soon can send hot coolant or steam spraying out, which can cause serious burns.

Even if the steam seems to stop, that does not mean the engine is cool enough to touch. Let the vehicle sit and cool down fully before checking anything under the hood. Waiting a little longer is always better than getting hurt.

LOOK FOR SIMPLE WARNING SIGNS

Once the engine has cooled, take a careful look around. You might see coolant leaking under the car, the coolant reservoir being low, or a hose that looks worn or broken. Sometimes the problem is just low coolant, but most of the time there is a bigger problem.

Overheating can happen for a number of reasons, such as a stuck thermostat, a broken water pump, a broken cooling fan, or a problem with the radiator. This is why you shouldn’t assume the problem is fixed just because the car cooled down for a while.

KNOW WHEN TO STOP DRIVING ALTOGETHER

If the car starts overheating again right away, continues losing coolant, or is running rough, driving it further is usually a bad gamble. At that point, towing the vehicle is often the safer and cheaper decision in the long run.

Nobody enjoys paying for a tow, but it can be far less expensive than paying for engine repairs after severe overheating.

GET THE PROBLEM CHECKED BEFORE IT GETS WORSE

Overheating is not one of those issues that usually disappears on its own. Even if the vehicle seems normal later, the cooling system still needs to be inspected so the actual cause can be found. Catching the problem early may mean the difference between a manageable repair and a much bigger bill.

If your car has overheated once, that is reason enough to have it looked at.

LET’S STAY COOL!

If your car is running hot, steaming, or showing any sign of overheating, bring it to Heath’s Auto Service in Cottonwood for a cooling system inspection. Getting the issue diagnosed early can help protect your engine and keep a smaller problem from turning into a major repair.
